If your school advertises on Google, the way you do it is about to change. Google is retiring standalone Display campaigns and folding them into a newer, AI-driven format called Demand Gen. It is one of the biggest shifts to Google Ads in years, and for schools that rely on digital advertising to fill open days and drive inquiries, it is worth understanding now rather than in a scramble later.
The reassuring part is that this is a change of format, not a loss of reach. The Google Display Network is not disappearing. But how you build campaigns, target families, and measure results is moving, and the schools that prepare early will keep their advertising working smoothly while others lose momentum during the transition.
Here is what is actually happening, the timeline that matters, and what your school should do about it.
In May 2026, Google confirmed that standalone Display campaigns are being absorbed into Demand Gen, its AI-powered campaign type. This does not mean the Google Display Network is going away. Display inventory will continue to exist, but it will now live inside Demand Gen campaigns alongside YouTube, including Shorts, the Discover feed, Gmail, and Google Maps.
The timeline is staged, which gives schools room to plan. Beginning in June 2026, eligible advertisers started seeing a migration tool inside Google Ads that moves existing Display campaigns into Demand Gen, carrying up to 42 days of performance history across so that the re-learning period is short, usually one to two days. From January 2027, it will no longer be possible to create new standalone Display campaigns at all, and any remaining Display campaigns will be migrated automatically after that.
In other words, this is not a change you can ignore and hope passes. It is a managed migration with a clear end date, and every school running Display advertising will be moved onto Demand Gen one way or another.
Demand Gen is best understood as Google's answer to the visual, feed-based advertising that families are used to seeing on social media. Instead of the text-and-banner logic of the old Display campaigns, Demand Gen is built around immersive creative: high-quality images and video shown across YouTube, Shorts, Discover, Gmail, and the Display network.
Two differences matter most for schools. First, Demand Gen does not use keywords. Targeting is driven by audiences, specifically your own first-party data, lookalike segments built from it, and custom audience signals. Second, it leans heavily on Google's automation. You provide the creative and the audience signals, and Google's machine learning decides who sees which asset, where, and at what bid.
That makes two things non-negotiable in the new model: the quality of your creative and the quality of your first-party data. Google can only optimise well if you feed it a rich, diverse set of images and video and a clean audience to learn from. Weak creative and thin data will produce weak results, no matter how much automation sits behind the campaign.
For most schools, Display advertising has quietly done the unglamorous work of staying visible: retargeting families who visited the website, building awareness in the local area, and keeping the school's name in front of parents during a long decision cycle. Demand Gen changes how that work gets done, and it raises the bar in three specific ways.
It raises the bar on creative. Banner ads assembled from a logo and a single line of text will no longer carry a campaign. Demand Gen rewards real photography and video that show the school authentically. This connects directly to a problem we see constantly, which is that most school digital advertising fails to convert because the creative and the message were never strong enough to begin with.
It raises the bar on data. Because targeting now depends on first-party audiences, your inquiry lists, CRM records, and event attendee data become the fuel that makes campaigns work. Schools that have been disciplined about collecting and organising this information have a real advantage, which is one more reason we encourage schools to use their own data to improve enrolment.
And it raises the bar on strategy over control. With more of the campaign automated, the manual levers schools used to pull are disappearing. What you can still control, namely positioning, creative, audience quality, and where the ad sends families, now matters more than ever.
The migration is manageable if you treat it as a project rather than a surprise. Four steps put your school in a strong position.
First, audit your current Display campaigns before the tool migrates them for you. Understand what is working, what you are spending, and which audiences are actually driving inquiries, so that you carry the right things forward rather than porting over waste.
Second, build and clean your first-party audiences now. Make sure inquiry forms, event registrations, and your CRM are feeding organised, consent-based audience lists into Google Ads. This is the single most valuable thing you can do to prepare, and it pays off well beyond advertising.
Third, invest in creative. Commission or gather a set of strong images and short video that show your school honestly and well. Aim for variety, because Demand Gen performs best when Google has a diverse, high-quality asset set to work with.
Fourth, do not set it and forget it. Automated does not mean unattended. The campaigns still need a clear goal, a strong landing experience, and someone watching the results, together with a fast way to capture interest when it arrives, whether that is a well-built form or an AI chatbot that turns visitors into leads. Traffic that lands on a weak page still will not convert, which is why more leads alone will not fix an enrolment problem.
WonderMaple Strategy works with schools, colleges, and learning centres to run digital advertising that produces inquiries, not just impressions. As Google moves from Display to Demand Gen, we help schools migrate their campaigns without losing performance, build the first-party audiences the new model depends on, develop creative that shows the school at its best, and connect every click to an enrolment journey designed to convert. It is the same joined-up thinking we bring to the whole school digital experience, from first impression to enrolled family.
If your school is running Google Ads and wants to be ready for this change rather than caught out by it, book a free recruitment audit at www.wondermaple.com. We will review your current advertising, data, and conversion path, and show you exactly what to prepare before the migration reaches you.
WonderMaple offers a free, no-commitment recruitment audit to help you see exactly where your school is losing inquiries and what to fix first.
